Cirrus Rocket & Parachute Maintenance at Canada West Avionics

Cirrus aircraft are uniquely equipped with the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System (CAPS), designed to deploy in life-threatening emergencies. A small ballistic rocket propels the parachute out of the aircraft’s fuselage, allowing the entire plane to descend more safely. This innovative technology has saved numerous lives and is a key feature that distinguishes Cirrus aircraft from other general aviation models.

CAPS-Approved Facility

At Canada West Avionics, we hold the specialized approval required to maintain and repair the ballistic rocket and parachute components. As a CAPS-approved facility, our technicians have undergone rigorous training and possess the necessary tooling to handle these systems with absolute precision. Our goal is to ensure that, should you ever need to use the parachute, it will deploy correctly and function exactly as designed.

  • Transport Canada Authorization: We maintain a separate approval certificate specifically for CAPS maintenance.
  • Trained Technicians: Our staff regularly updates their skills to stay in sync with Cirrus’s latest service bulletins and procedures.
  • Quality & Safety Standards: Each inspection and replacement is carried out under strict guidelines to guarantee top performance.

Maintenance Intervals & Key Components

  • Every 5 Years: Conduct a comprehensive inspection of the parachute housing, rocket integrity, and associated hardware.
  • Every 6 Years: Replace the line cutters, which are crucial for cleanly separating the parachute’s lines if the system is deployed.
  • Every 10 Years: Replace both the rocket and the parachute itself. The ballistic rocket charge loses effectiveness over time, and the parachute canopy’s materials can degrade, making this replacement interval essential for continued safety.

By adhering to the recommended intervals and entrusting your aircraft to a qualified CAPS-approved facility, you ensure that this critical safety system is always ready for the unexpected.

Gordon Bott, at CW Avionics, has been wonderfully prompt and detailed with fast quotes and correspondence.

I approached Gordon Bott at Canada West Avionics at CZBB (Boundary Bay) before Christmas about an Aerospace Logic fuel gage, an AOA, and some small lighting issues. He promised me a quote as soon as possible.

He very kindly, and very quickly had the pitch servo removed and we confirmed that one of the switches was broken. He kept the servo ad will order the parts today.

Really good service to this point.

“Hello Canada West team!!!!

I just wanted to reach out and say Thank You!!   Everything looks great and seems to be functioning well!
I appreciate the efforts you all put in!  I know that little plane can be a pain since it’s so small and compact with no room to do anything… but I appreciate that you guys did it, and everything turned out great.”
